The Escape
Sheriff's deputies first heard about the escape Wednesday around 2:20 p.m. Authorities said they were told the inmate had fled the prison, located in Annapolis at 131 Jennifer Road, and was running toward the nearby Anne Arundel Medical Center, located at 2001 Medical Parkway.
Deputies, detention officers, Anne Arundel County Police Department officers and hospital security guards all searched for the suspect at the medical complex.
The sheriff said the hospital went on a brief lockdown during the search.
Officials said a deputy spotted somebody hiding beneath a blanket inside a car in the hospital's parking garage A around 2:39 p.m.
A press release said the car was occupied and the owner was unaware that somebody was hiding in the backseat.
The driver was safely removed from the car, the release said.
Authorities said the person hiding, later identified as the escape suspect, exited the car after a short standoff and was taken into custody.
The inmate sustained minor injuries during the escape, officials said.
The sheriff thinks the suspect worked his way through multiple layers of barbed wire while in the prison yard. The inmate then jumped off the building and fled across Jennifer Road toward the hospital, the release said.
