Firefighters Flee Man Holding Gun: Annapolis Police

An Annapolis man holding what appeared to be a handgun, but was later found to be a BB gun, faces assault charges, police say.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — A man holding what appeared to be a handgun faces assault charges after he approached Annapolis firefighters in a neighborhood distributing safety information, according to Annapolis Police. The incident occurred about 2 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Tyler Avenue as firefighters were handing out fliers about smoke alarms.

According to the Annapolis Police report, firefighters saw a man in the backyard of one of the homes holding a handgun. The firefighters asked if the gun was real and the man began walking toward them waving the gun at them. He dropped the magazine from the gun and appeared to begin loading it. Fearing they would be shot, the firefighters fled the area and called the police.

Officers identified the suspect as Oscar Chavez, 19, of Annapolis. A search warrant for the home was obtained and a silver and black BB gun was found inside.

Chavez was arrested and charged with first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, police say. He was released by the District Court Commissioner.
