Fleeing Drug Suspect on Stolen Bike Bitten By Police Dog

An Annapolis man with a backpack containing marijuana and cash fled police, but was found by a K9 that latched on to the suspect.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — An Annapolis man on a stolen motorcycle might have gotten away from police if he'd been a better driver, officials say.

A patrol officer tried to stop the motorcycle with a concealed tag on Route 665 Tuesday, but the driver wouldn't stop. Instead, he fled southbound, but Annapolis Police say he "was not able to operate it skillfully." So, the suspect ditched the bike near Chinquapin Round Road and ran into the wood line.

A check of the motorcycle's tag showed it was reported stolen Aug. 1 from Virginia. An Anne Arundel County Sheriff's Office K9 team found the motorcycle driver off Pythian Drive. The suspect was bitten by the police dog during his apprehension.

Police identified the suspect as Charles Wells, 20, of Annapolis. He was arrested and taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center for treatment of the dog bites, then taken to police headquarters for booking.

A backpack discarded by Wells as he fled the motorcycle contained 11 grams of marijuana and more than $2,200 in cash, according to police. Wells was charged with theft, drug possession, and traffic violations.
