Annapolis Cop Recovering From Traumatic Brain Injury Needs Your Help

Heroes Pub in Annapolis is holding a fundraiser April 10 to help an officer recovering from a broken neck, or you can donate via GoFundMe.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Heroes Pub in Annapolis will hold a fundraiser April 10 to help a police officer recovering from a broken neck suffered in a crash while on duty, or you can donate via the GoFundMe website to help the family with expenses. Officer First Class Michael Macri was injured in the line of duty on Oct. 5, 2016, when he responded to a report that shots were fired and was involved in a car crash.

The Annapolis Police Department says Macri, a nine-year veteran of the force, suffered severe injuries from which he is still recovering, and he "is in need of your support during this long road to recovery."

Heroes Pub, 1 Riverview Ave., will sponsor the fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, April 10. If you cannot stop by during those hours, the owners of Heroes will donate 20 percent every tab throughout the day to support the Macri family. When you order, be sure to tell your server you are supporting the Macri family.

Officer Macri was responding to an emergency call with his lights and siren activated when the department says a vehicle turned in front of his patrol vehicle on Bay Ridge Avenue and the vehicles collided. Macri suffered a broken neck, traumatic brain injury, nerve damage, two herniated discs in his lower back, and a torn labrum, the creator of his GoFundMe page says.

The goal of the online fundraiser is to collect $50,000 for Macri and his family.

According to the "Officer Macri we got your 6" GoFundMe page, "Due to his quick thinking and training, (Macri) was able to avoid harming the driver but in turn was very badly injured himself. Lucky for Officer Macri (aka Mac Meathead), he is a very physically fit person; and that big ol neck of his probably saved his life!!!"

The Annapolis officer's family is "lucky to still have him with us," friends said online. "It's our turn as a community to help Officer Macri and his family as they battle the road to recovery. All donations will go directly to the Macri family."
