ANNAPOLIS, MD — Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant closed its Anne Arundel County location on Monday, Eye On Annapolis reported.

The German pub was located in the Annapolis Town Center at 1906 Towne Centre Blvd.

The first Gordon Biersch opened in 1988 in Palo Alto, California. It grew into a chain with six full breweries and five smaller airport locations in the U.S. It also has six sites in Taiwan.

The Gordon Biersch website no longer lists the Annapolis location, which offered draft beer brewed on-site. Patrons could also chow down on German foods like crispy chicken schnitzel or American favorites like loaded burgers and ribeye steaks.

Ray Ascione was a regular customer at Gordon Biersch. He will remember the pub for its atmosphere.

"To say that Gordon Biersch was an institution to me over the last decade+ is an understatement," Ascione said Tuesday on Facebook. "I felt like Norm and this was my Cheers. Lots of parties, laughing, crying, and fixing the world over beers with friends and family."

Ascione understands that things change, however.

"With all the amazing micro-breweries popping up, this began to show it's age," the Annapolis resident said. "When COVID hit, it never quite recovered."

Gordon Biersch was one of the original restaurants from when the town center first opened in October 2008, Eye On Annapolis said. Ziki Japanese Steakhouse and P.F. Chang's are the only original eateries left.

Gordon Biersch is not alone in its closure at the town center. Bed Bath & Beyond announced last week that it will soon shutter its town center location at an unknown date.

Balancing out these closures, the Annapolis Town Center has several recent additions.

A new furniture store, called Summer Classics Home and Gabby Decor, opened last month. Pottery Barn cut the ribbon a few weeks later. An outdoor ice-skating rink debuted this January. And Life Time, a luxury gym, joined the town center in fall 2022.

Patch requested a comment from SPB Hospitality, Gordon Biersch's parent company. We have not yet gotten a response. We will update this article if we hear back.
