Hats on!

Nearly 50 Annapolis Senior Activity Center members attended the Mother’s Day Tea at the center May 19. Although the day started in the ‘40s, the day quickly warmed up to the ‘70s – warm enough for the ladies to wear their spring finery and summer hats.

Greta Wilson wanted her hat to be different, so she decorated it with tea bags and the words, “I’m Going to A Tea Party.” Reminiscent of Minnie Pearl’s price tag on her hat, Wilson had a tea bag hanging from hers. She also had a “tea bag” bracelet.

Shirley Atwell’s hat was also different. She had bought an Easter wreath at the center’s Flea Market last year. This year the wreath with all its Easter eggs decorated her hat, making her an “egghead,” she joked.

One senior wore a cowboy hat. Another wore a breast cancer awareness pink ribbon logo hat. Straw hats and elegant, churchgoing hats of various colors and styles also adorned the heads of the seniors attending the tea.

As they sipped their tea and indulged in cream cheese, cucumber and chicken salad sandwiches, they listened to patriotic tunes and show music. Voices of Melody, formerly known as the Retired Teachers Chorus, performed while the seniors sang along.

Irene Winters recalled seeing the original Broadway musical, “South Pacific,” when she was a freshman in college. Fifty years later, she went on a senior center trip to see it again. “The original cast was there,” she said.

They nibbled on strawberries, cheesecake, petit fours and other pastries and complimented each other’s appearance. It was a day of relaxation and decadence – a day to just enjoy life.
