Hay’s a hit for Halloween

Run! Tackle! Sneak attack! Hide! Hay flies as children throw it, rake it and burrow beneath it. It’s all in fun as the children fill in the gaps between the serious business of stuffing hay and stakes into clothes until they resemble headless men, women and children.

Once they’ve poised their creations on hay bales and strollers, it’s back to chasing each other, playing hide and seek, and sliding and tumbling in the grass and hay.

Until COVID, the children would be celebrating Halloween at a party at Germantown Elementary School.

Last year Admiral Heights residents started making scarecrows at the entrance to their community. This year about 15 children with their parents in tow decided that they would do it again. Although some newcomers showed up, many of the children had made scarecrows last year. They knew the recipe to success. Ask their parents for help and leave them to do it.

All kidding aside, it was a fun time for all. For those who couldn’t make it, children and parents put together “grab and go bags.” “The to-go option was pretty popular this year,” according to Lauren Heier, organizer of the event. “I think we (Lauren and her husband, John) delivered about five - six bags to neighbors and then had a few porch pick-ups!”

Everyone wanted to share the fun, so happy Halloween to all and to all a scary, bewitching and candy-filled night.

P.S. Don’t expect to see those scarecrows at the entrance to the community this year. Learning from last year, a great many participants had strollers to spirit away the scarecrows to their own front yards.
