Primary Business Focus: Cruises’ Waterfront Facilities Manager D. Whitney Palmer said, “The mission of the Schooner Woodwind is to introduce people to sailing, while also providing our guests with the most unique and authentic sailing experience on the Chesapeake Bay.
The extended ‘family’ of crewmembers are chosen for their sailing knowledge, friendliness and enthusiasm. These are the qualities that make a guest’s on-board experience a special one.”

For the past 19 years, Ken, Ellen, and their daughter Jen “have been successful in sharing their love of sailing to people who come aboard the Schooner Woodwind and Woodwind II, an identical pair of 74-foot wooden schooners.” Schooner Woodwind offers an array of cruises—races, historically themed trips, sunset excursions, beer tastings, local musician nights and privately chartered affairs for groups.
Position: Crewmember Opening
According to Palmer, one of the benefits of working the crew position is “interacting with different people from all over. Many of these people have never sailed in their lives.” Palmer thinks a good crewmember candidate has “working sailing experience or has been through sailing school or grew up in a family that had a boat. Team attitude is important, too, as is customer service. The way you interact with a customer should be outgoing.

Position: Dockhand Opening
The ideal person for this position I somebody who wants to stay busy because he or she “will need to like a fast-paced job,” Palmer says, adding that duties include “helping out both Woodwind Customers and patrons of Pussers restaurant at the Marriott.” A candidate who is “someone who knows boating, boating practices, and a small amount of handy and maintenance work and has marina experience” would be ideal, Palmer says. He adds, “A good amount of local knowledge is important for hotel guests exploring the area and for giving good parking directions.”
