ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Christmas has come and gone. With the New Year on the way, the annual question looms: What do I do with my Christmas tree?

Though many families leave their trees up as long as possible, officials warn this could be dangerous. The National Fire Protection Association says dried-out trees present a fire hazard and should not be left in homes or garages or placed against a home.

That said, Anne Arundel County residents have two options for disposing of their live Christmas trees. They can leave it at their curb or take it to one of the county's Recycling Centers.

That's right. Christmas trees can be recycled into mulch.

The county offered the following tips for tree disposal:

  • Please remove tree stands, bags, metal ornament hangers, and all decorations.
  • Cut very tall trees in half so that the tree will fit into the contractor's truck.
  • Natural garland, wreaths, and Christmas trees will be collected on your collection day.
  • Yard waste is collected at the curb on your collection day all year round.
  • Put your natural garland, wreaths, and Christmas trees at the curb before 6 a.m. on your collection day or bring your items to any one of our Recycling Centers.
