Annapolis Homeless Shelter Wins Grant To Feed Anne Arundel Residents

An Annapolis homeless shelter won a grant to feed Anne Arundel County residents. The money will help the shelter meet its high demand.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — An Annapolis homeless shelter won a $2,000 grant to feed Anne Arundel County residents in need.

The shelter, named The Light House - A Homeless Prevention Support Center, announced the news on Monday. The nonprofit thanked the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation for the award.

“The Light House has a long history of providing vital basic needs services to our community,” said Sarah Ryan, the shelter's associate director of community engagement. “This includes ensuring that our neighbors struggling with homelessness and food insecurity have the nutritious food required to support the health and well-being of themselves and their families."

The shelter has seen increased demand during the coronavirus pandemic. The Light House food pantry has served 170 percent more households since March 2020.

In 2021, the nonprofit distributed 270,000 pounds of food and served 83,000 meals. It also offered emergency shelter, clothing and case management to thousands of community members.

"During these last two years, our Light House food programs have been more important than ever," Ryan said in a press release. "We have seen a dramatic increase in neighbors seeking our services due to the Covid-19 crisis."

The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation supports families facing food insecurity in 10 states. The foundation has awarded more than $15 million in grants since it was established in 2001.

"We are so grateful for the continued support from our friends at the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation," Ryan said. "These funds will help us reach even more of our neighbors struggling to make ends meet.”
