Man Jumps Off Severn River Bridge In Apparent Suicide

A man died in an apparent suicide after jumping off the Severn River Bridge, according to Maryland State Police.

ANNAPOLIS, MD – A man died in an apparent suicide after jumping off the Severn River Bridge Sunday morning, according to Maryland State Police. The unidentified man reportedly crashed his SUV into another car and barriers on the bridge before leaving the vehicle and leaping off the structure, authorities say.

Just after 8:30 a.m. Maryland State Police received a 9-1-1 call from a driver who reported a man had jumped off the westbound side of the Severn River Bridge. Officers from the Annapolis Barrack went immediately t0 the site, but the man had already jumped over the bridge. Emergency responders from the Anne Arundel County Fire Department, Maryland Natural Resources Police and the US Coast Guard responded to help with the rescue.

The victim's body was located by Anne Arundel County Fire Department and taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Investigators say before the man jumped off the bridge he drove a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe westbound on U.S. Route 50 from southbound MD Route 2 and struck the rear of a Jeep Wrangler which sustained minor damage. The man continued westbound where his SUVK struck the center median concrete barrier between the east and westbound lanes on US 50, crossed all three lanes of travel, struck the concrete barrier along the slow shoulder and stopped. Witnesses told police the driver of the Santa Fe got out of the vehicle and jumped off the bridge.
