Maryland Lawmakers On Alexandria Shootings: 'Saddened,' 'Sickened,' 'Time...To Reflect'
Gov. Larry Hogan and other lawmakers from Maryland responded to the shootings Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia.

Maryland lawmakers have offered their prayers and thoughts after a gunman opened fire on a field of Republicans Wednesday morning in Alexandria, Virginia.
Multiple people were shot and the gunman died following an exchange of gunfire with police at the scene, officials said. The FBI is leading an investigation into the incident.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana, who was in critical condition after being shot in the hip, was among the lawmakers who had been practicing for the Congressional baseball game at the time of the shooting. Maryland politicians were not on the rosters for game, which pits Democrats against Republicans.

"The First Lady and I send our prayers for a speedy recovery to Congressman Scalise and all those who were injured and impacted by this senseless violence, including the courageous first responders who answered the call and risked their lives to save others," Hogan, a Republican, said.
Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer issued this statement about his Republican counterpart, who was injured:
“My prayers today are with my friend Whip Steve Scalise and with all those who were injured in the shooting this morning, including the U.S. Capitol Police officers who courageously responded and saved lives. Those who protect us in the Congressional leadership and throughout the U.S. Capitol complex every day risk their lives and safety to ensure the safe exercise of the American people’s government. They have my immense gratitude – today and every day.
“Rep. Scalise and I may stand on opposite sides of the aisle as our parties’ whips, but at the end of the day we are friends, fellow Representatives, and fellow Americans. I hope everyone in our country will take time today to reflect on how our commonalities far outweigh our differences and that we all share in the work of this grand experiment in democracy.”
"I am praying for a speedy recovery for Steve Scalise & all those injured during the heinous ambush this morning," Rep. Elijah Cummings, a Democrat, said.
"Sickened, angry and heartbroken over the shooting involving colleagues this morning," Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, a Democrat, said in a statement.
"Such tragedy today," Senator Ben Cardin, a Democrat, said. "This is truly senseless."
