ANNAPOLIS, MD — One Maryland ZIP code is included in real estate data provider PropertyShark's 2019 ranking of the 100 most expensive areas in the United States. It's a private, gated enclave with seven miles of shoreline on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay.

PropertyShark compiles the annual list by using closed sale home prices as opposed to asking prices. Although California and New York State completely dominated 2019’s top 100, isolated pockets of extreme affluence and luxury real estate meant that the zip codes of nine additional states made the ranking zips, including one Maryland locale.

The No. 1 most expensive ZIP code on the list was in Atherton, California. The 94027 ZIP code set a historic high, making 2019 the first year in which a median sale price surpassed $7 million. Sagaponack, New York’s 11962 repeated from last year as the No. 2 most expensive U.S. zip code in 2019 with a median sale price of $4.3 million.
