Middle School Student Wins Third Spelling Bee Title

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — A Crofton Middle School student won his third countywide spelling bee contest over the weekend.

Quint Karlsson won the 38th annual Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee on Saturday after correctly spelling the word "tortillon" in the contest's 22nd round, according to a release by the school district.

Merriam-Webster defines "tortillon" as "a small rolled-paper stump used in charcoal drawing for rubbing or blending."

Karlsson's championship win now means he'll represent Anne Arundel County at the 101st National Spelling Bee contest this May in Washington, D.C.

The second-place win was claimed by Arman Muhammad, of Meade Middle School. Melina Tlemsani from Old Mill Middle School North landed the third-place win.

A total of 25 students from across the county participated in the weekend's contest.
