Naval Academy Ups Security After Iran Strikes

The Naval Support Activity Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy are increasing their security after Saturday's U.S.-Israeli airstrikes.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Naval Support Activity Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy announced security measures would be increased starting Saturday amid heightened concerns following the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

A release issued by the academy and the NSAA said that measures included closing the Visitor Control Center and Gate 1 by Halsey Field House. Gate 8 and the turnstiles would remain open.

General public visits were also suspended until further notice.

Visitations tied to any Naval Academy-sponsored event were still permitted, but those attending would be required to ride a shuttle bus from the Press Box side of the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. A Real ID would also be needed to gain access.

Any visitors with an ID from the Department of Defense or the Defense Biometric Identification System would be permitted to drive or walk onto the campus through Gate 8.

Closures have also been applied to the access roads, trails and nature center at Greenbury Point, a conservation area managed by the NSAA. The closure does not apply to the individuals staying at the Cottages, according to the release.

Officials say restrictions may "evolve," urging the public to anticipate delays at Gate 8.
