ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Navy football team will wear special uniforms for its home game on Sept. 11. The threads, designed by Under Armour, will honor the Marine Corps on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The Marines' battle cry of "OO-RAH" is situated on the front of the hemets. The back reads "SEMPER FI." That's short for the Marine motto of "Semper Fidelis," a Latin saying meaning "Always Faithful."

The top of the helmets will also highlight the quatrefoil braid that distinguishes the Marine officer cap. Plus, the Marine Corps' Eagle, Globe and Anchor emblem is displayed on the left side of the helmet, both shoulders and the left pant leg.

Additionally, the pants feature a red stripe that models the trousers of the Marine Corps. That line, called the "Blood Stripe," pays respect to all the fallen and injured Marines.

Photos of the equipment, which Navy unveiled on Aug. 16, are posted below.

More than 70 active duty officers and senior enlisted Marines are assigned to the U.S. Naval Academy. About a quarter of all academy graduates enter the Marine Corps through a competitive process that requires extra training.

Nearly half of all Navy football players choose the Marine route. The current football staff includes four Naval Academy alumni who either served or are currently active in the Marines. Those leaders include:

  • Cornerbacks coach Robert Green (Class of 1998)
  • Wide receivers coach Mick Yokitis (Class of 2006)
  • Director of Player Development Capt. Donnie Bowers (Class of 2011)
  • Director of Operations Brian Blick (Class of 2012)

The Midshipmen will sport the gear when they face the U.S. Air Force Academy Falcons. The game is at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis.

CBS will air the matchup nationwide. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
