New Grocer Sets Opening Date, Continues Growth In Anne Arundel

A German supermarket set the opening date for its latest Anne Arundel store. The grocer is in the midst of a 10-store expansion in Maryland.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Lidl, a European grocer, announced the opening date of its first Annapolis location. The new store will have a grand opening on Feb. 3.

Located at 2375 Solomons Island Road, the supermarket will fill the vacancy left by Shoppers Food Market. Lidl bought the site in 2019 when it purchased three other Maryland properties from Shoppers.

"Ward 3 is excitedly anticipating the opening of Lidl Grocery at the site of the former Shoppers Food Market, where Lidl will be offering a diverse product line," Annapolis Alderwoman Rhonda Pindell Charles said in a press release. "Likewise, we appreciate Lidl bringing well-paying jobs with great benefits and healthcare coverage for all to the area."

This will be Lidl's 15th store in Maryland, and it's part of the company's nationwide expansion. The growth will bring these 10 stores to the state:

  • Brooklyn Park (Anne Arundel County) on Ritchie Highway
  • Columbia (Howard County) on Little Patuxent Parkway
  • Glen Burnie (Anne Arundel County) on Ritchie Highway
  • Frederick (Frederick County) on W. Patrick Street
  • Montgomery Village (Montgomery County) on Montgomery Village Avenue
  • Oxon Hill (Prince George’s County) on Livingston Road
  • Takoma Park (Montgomery County) on New Hampshire Avenue
  • Timonium (Baltimore County) on East Padonia Road
  • Wheaton (Montgomery County) on Randolph Road

The Annapolis store will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:40 a.m. on its opening day. The first 100 customers will collect a gift card ranging in value from $5 to $100 each. Shoppers can also enter to win a $500 gift card and expect special offers and giveaways.

Economic Impact

"It is exciting news that a fast-growing global company like Lidl is continuing to invest and offer good-paying job opportunities at a time when they are needed the most," Gov. Larry Hogan said in an August press release announcing the stores. "We welcome these new stores to our communities, and look forward to working with Lidl to ensure their continued growth and success in Maryland."

The first Lidl opened in Germany in 1973. After spreading around Europe, the grocer opened its first U.S. store in 2017.

The chain currently has more than 100 locations in America. Though Lidl is growing, two of its North Carolina sites will close, Business Insider reports.

The $500 million expansion plan calls for 50 new stores across nine east coast states. This will bring about 2,000 jobs to the region. Hogan said the forthcoming Maryland stores will create about 400 jobs in the state.

"This is more good news for our economic recovery, and will help more Marylanders get back to work," Hogan said.
