New Budget Grocery Store Coming To Annapolis: Hogan

Annapolis is getting a new budget grocer. The European chain is adding 10 locations in Maryland as part of its 50-store American expansion.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Annapolis is getting a new grocery store, Gov. Larry Hogan announced Tuesday morning. Lidl, a budget grocer, will move into its Annapolis home by the end of 2021.

The new store is one of 10 that Lidl plans to open in Maryland. The chain currently has nine stores in the state, with the closest being in Bowie.

"It is exciting news that a fast-growing global company like Lidl is continuing to invest and offer good-paying job opportunities at a time when they are needed the most," Hogan said in a press release, noting that the store will move in somewhere along Solomons Island Road. "We welcome these new stores to our communities, and look forward to working with Lidl to ensure their continued growth and success in Maryland."

Economic Impact

The first Lidl opened in Germany in 1973. After expanding around Europe, the grocer opened its first U.S. store in 2017.

The chain currently has 110 locations in America. Though Lidl is growing, two of its North Carolina sites will close, Business Insider reports.

Lidl announced its most recent wave of expansions Tuesday. The $500 million plan calls for 50 new stores across nine east coast states.

This will bring about 2,000 jobs to the region. Hogan said the forthcoming Maryland stores will create about 400 jobs in the state.

Maryland added 53,900 jobs in July, as the state continues to rebound from losses caused by coronavirus. Hogan says Maryland has recovered 156,200 jobs since the pandemic started.

The state's unemployment rate dropped to 7.6 percent in July. That is down from its 10.1 percent peak in April.

Anne Arundel County's July unemployment data is not yet available. The county had a 7.4 percent unemployment rate in June. Anne Arundel's unemployment claims have decreased every month since they peaked at 9.8 percent in April.

"This is more good news for our economic recovery, and will help more Marylanders get back to work," Hogan said.
