Annapolis Charity Donates $500K To Nonprofit Housing Patients During Treatment
An Anne Arundel County charity donated $500,000 to a nonprofit that houses patients who must travel for health care.
ANNAPOLIS, MD — An Annapolis charity recently donated $500,000 to a nonprofit that houses patients who must travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for health care.
The donation from the Phillips Charitable Foundation was announced on Sept. 8. The money will help Family House, Inc. renovate its 121-room facility.
Family House, formed in 1983, offers comfortable and affordable lodging for hospital patients and their relatives. The organization previously operated multiple locations, but it decided to consolidate.

The group now welcomes patients to the former Shadyside Courtyard by Marriott. The new Family House opened in July after a year-long renovation. The site will offer lounges on each floor, a reflection room, a large communal kitchen and several gathering places.
"Family House serves patients and their families and caregivers from all across the country and around the world," Executive Director Jennifer March said in a press release. "We are humbled by the generosity of the Phillips Charitable Foundation and inspired by being selected as a beneficiary of its support, which further extends our circle of community partners far beyond the Pittsburgh region."

The Phillips Charitable Foundation grant will go to the Family House's Under One Roof campaign.
This $16 million initiative, announced in May, is raising money for the purchase and renovation of Family House's new facility. The grant from the Phillips Charitable Foundation brought the ongoing fundraising total to nearly $13.1 million.
The Phillips Charitable Foundation was created in 2016 at the request of the late Howard W. Phillips Jr.
Phillips left his entire estate to the charitable foundation, which supports organizations that help others solve problems and remove obstacles.
Eileen Gross, a long-time friend of Phillips, started the foundation. She now serves as its president and board chair.
Gross said the Phillips Charitable Foundation toured Family House's new facility at its grand opening gala in May.
"We knew that Family House perfectly matched Howard’s philanthropic intentions," Gross said in the release. "That also is why our Board agreed to make this gift the largest the Foundation has ever awarded."
