Police: Plane Crash Victims Were Annapolis Pilot and His Mother

Small plane crashed Friday evening in Halifax County, Virginia.

The two victims in a small plane crash in Halifax County, Va., have been identified as an Annapolis pilot and his mother, according to the Virginia State Police.

Pilot Jon Couch, 46, and, Frances G. Couch, 72, both of Annapolis, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, Jon Couch’s World War II T28-C single-engine aircraft crashed in a large field within the racetrack of the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Va., according to a state police spokesperson.

The plane was flying low over the field just prior to the crash, according to witness reports. There was a small brush fire sparked by the crash, but the plane itself did not catch fire, according to the VSP. No one on the ground was injured.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
