NAACP Rally: Issue State Of Emergency On Race Relations

The rally on Sunday will urge officials to join Councilman Smith in declaring a state of emergency on race relations.

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- The Anne Arundel County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is sponsoring a rally at the Alex Haley-Kunta Kinte Memorial on Sunday.

The rally, which begins at 2:30 p.m., will aim to convince Gov. Hogan to declare a "State of Emergency on Race Relations" in Maryland. It will also call on County Executive Schuh to make the declaration in the county and Mayor Pantelides to make it in Annapolis.

Reverend Stephen Tillett, president of the Anne Arundel County branch of the NAACP, said "the binary, two-dimensional nature of public discourse in this country has created a dynamic where many people who are not brown are unable and unwilling to acknowledge that there is a problem."

There have been several incidents in Maryland lately of nooses being found at residences and school campuses, as well as national monuments.

Anne Arundel County Councilman Pete Smith, D-Severn, initially called for the state of emergency on race relations after the fatal stabbing of 2nd Lt. Richard Collins, who was black, at a bus stop in May.
