Bay Bridge Run Brings Road Closures To Anne Arundel County: What To Know

The Bay Bridge run takes place Sunday in Anne Arundel County, brining a mix of road closures to the community. Here's what you need to know.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — One of Maryland's most unique races will get underway in Annapolis this weekend, which also means road closures for drivers in Anne Arundel County.

Featuring some 2,000 participants, Bay Bridge Run kicks off Sunday at 7 a.m. near the Northrup Grumman bayside campus, with staggered corrals every 15 minutes.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge itself accounts for over 4 miles of the 10K race course. The point-to-point course has participants walk or run the eastbound span of the bridge, which peaks at 186 feet.

Because the eastbound span is part of the race course, it will be closed to drivers from 12:01 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The Maryland Transportation Authority will operate two-way traffic on the westbound span.

"One lane of traffic will operate in each direction on the westbound span, with the center lane closed to traffic," the agency said in a release. "The center lane may open to traffic intermittently to help reduce westbound delays."

Travelers are warned that event-related road adjustments may cause significant delays. MDTA urges drivers to hit the roads before 6 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to avoid most traffic.

The following road closures and detours will be implemented on the Eastern Shore:

  • Closed: Off-ramp from eastbound US-50 to MD-8
Detour: Drivers can expect a detour directing motorists to the next exit at Thompson Creek Road. Motorists will then travel westbound on Maryland Route 835 to the signal at state Route 8.
  • Closed: On-ramp from Maryland Route 8 to westbound US-50
Detour: Drivers trying to access westbound US-50 will be directed to state Route 18, then the roundabout at Castle Marina Road toward westbound US-50.
  • Note: Any travelers wanting to get onto westbound US-50 are urged to approach the highway from either Duke Street or Castle Marina Road.
