'Star Wars' Data: Yoda's English, Lame Stormtroopers, Star Robots

Analysis of movie franchise -- with "The Force Awakens" in theaters -- studies exactly how terrible Stormtroopers are at doing their job.

Fans worldwide are snapping up tickets this weekend to watch “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which opened Friday in movie theaters.

The seventh movie in the sci-fi film franchise, led by director J.J. Abrams, brings back beloved characters like Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca. And it introduces new heroes fighting forces of evil in the galaxy.

The “Star Wars” fans at Capital News Service say collectively, we’ve seen the “Star Wars” movies — even the newer, less good ones — dozens of times.

But they still had questions. Weird questions that remained unanswered, mostly because no one had taken the time to collect the data. Like:

  • Exactly how terrible are Stormtroopers at doing their job?
  • Does Yoda actually talk like Yoda? --Or is his speech more normal than we all remember?
  • Who has more lines in each of the movies: women or robots?
  • Which character kills the most people?

They watched the movies over and over, painstakingly building the dataset required to answer those questions, plus a few others. It was hard work, but we were not afraid.

We found the droids we were looking for — and some surprises. Here’s what we learned.
