Triple Amputee Vet to Receive Custom-Built Home

An Army veteran who became a triple amputee following a bomb blast in Afghanistan will have a home built in Anne Arundel County that is adapted to his special needs. 

Army Sgt. Adam Keys was deployed in December 2009 with the 20th Brigade of the 27th Engineer Battalion to a rural area southeast of Kandahar, to keep the roads clear for supply lines. Six months into his tour, he hit an improvised explosive device causing catastrophic injuries, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department’s Facebook page.

The blast broke Keys’ jaw, left shoulder, arm, and ankles, and he suffered a severe concussion. A massive infection set in that would nearly kill Keys and required the amputation of his left arm, an ankle and one leg above the knee. Eventually, his other leg would be amputated, too.

During his recovery, Keys would undergo more than 130 surgeries, along with skin grafts and numerous hours of physical therapy.
