What's Open, Closed in Annapolis on Labor Day 2016 (ICYMI)

See what's open, or not, on Monday, Sept. 5, in the Annapolis area. A parade and First Sunday Art Show are planned.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — While many city and county services, along with schools, are closed or limited for the Labor Day holiday, there’s a parade planned and an art show slated to enjoy in Annapolis.

City of Annapolis government offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 5, in observance of Labor Day.

Refuse and recycling collection:

  • If collection for refuse and recycling is on Monday, September 5, it will be collected on Tuesday, September 6.
  • If collection for refuse and recycling is on Tuesday, September 6, it will be collected on Wednesday, September 7.
  • There will be no collection of bulk items or yard waste on Wednesday, September 7.

Annapolis Labor Day Parade

The local Elks Club will host the annual Pre-Labor Day Elks Parade on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 3 p.m. It begins at Amos Garrett Boulevard and heads down West Street and turns left on Calvert Street. There will be a small reviewing booth on Calvert Street.

The parade is expected to last until 5 p.m. and the both West Street and Calvert Street will be closed to traffic.

Arts Festival Open

Meanwhile, the First Sunday Arts Festival is also being held on West Street and Calvert Street on Sunday, Sept. 4, beginning at 11 a.m. The streets and parks on West and Calvert will be filled with artists and music. West Street from Church Circle to Calvert Street will be closed until the event concludes at 5 p.m. For more information, go to www.firstsundayarts.com.

Anne Arundel County Services

  • All county offices are closed
  • Landfill and Convenience centers are closed
  • There will be no curbside collection. Monday collections will occur Tuesday. Tuesday collections will occur Wednesday
  • Anne Arundel County libraries will be closed
  • Senior Centers will be closed
  • Regional Parks will remain open
  • Anne Arundel County Public Schools and central offices will be closed Monday.

Public Open Day at Mayo Beach Park

Mayo Beach Park, 4150 Honeysuckle Drive in Edgewater, will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Labor Day. This event is free and open to the general public. Bring your kids and your grandkids and a picnic and enjoy this county-owned public beach.

This county-owned public park is only rarely open to the general public. Mayo Beach has wide sand beaches, a bath house, a playground, a softball field, parking for hundreds of cars and a pavilion that is usually rented out for weddings. Bring your canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard and launch from the beach. Bring your binoculars and find the birds that live in the huge tidal pond behind the park.

No alcohol and please leash your dog.
