Where Does Annapolis Rank on List of Most Charming State Capitals?

Thriving locally owned businesses, low crime, parks and public gathering spots: Annapolis has it all says a new ranking of state capitals.

Annapolis, MD — While Baltimore has been dubbed Charm City, Annapolis has landed a similar nickname in a list of state capitals.

The city is ranked the second-most charming state capital in the United States by RentLingo, an apartment search site. The website authors created a data mapping tool called Charm Index that uses data on locally owned businesses, crime, local lifestyles (such as bike trails or gyms in the area) and more to create its scores.

Based on the results, Annapolis ranked as the second most charming state capital with an overall charm score of 87.49. Since the Charm Index provides individual street scores, this ranking is the combination of every street and block in Annapolis.

“A charming neighborhood is created from flourishing local business combined with a residence that feels safe, is active, and has many opportunities to interact with other residents,” RentLingo says. “Local shops such as book stores, theatres, and restaurants that receive high ratings by residents tend to create very charming atmospheres, call us crazy. Meanwhile, neighborhoods that are not as charming have a higher percentage of chain stores, pawn shops, strip clubs, credit loan stores, crime, and do not have access to community institutions such as parks, town halls and flea markets.”

The most charming capital city is Boston, says the website, while the top 5 was rounded out by Providence, RI; Washington, DC; and Madison, WI.
