AACPS Superintendent Addresses Parents' Fears About Coronavirus

Anne Arundel Co. School Superintendent Arlotto wrote in a letter to parents that additional school cleanings are not needed at this time.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent George Arlotto aimed to allay parents' concerns about the coronavirus outbreak in China and positive cases popping up in the United States. Arlotto explained in a letter addressed to parents Thursday that the district is working closely with the Maryland Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"It is also important to understand that as of this writing, we have no confirmed cases of coronavirus in Anne Arundel County or Maryland. This is a rapidly changing situation, and one which we are monitoring closely. According to the CDC, most people get infected with viruses in the coronavirus family at some point in their lives. The 2019 novel strain at the center of the current issue is a new one and has a more severe impact in terms of respiratory illness with fever, cough and difficulty breathing associated with travel in China," Arlotto wrote.

Arlotto explained that the CDC considers the public health threat to be low and there is no need for additional school cleanings. However, many things can be done to prevent the spread of flu-like illnesses in the meantime.

"We urge families, employees and children to take simple precautions that can minimize the impact and contain the spread of illnesses," Arlotto stated.

To help prevent the seasonal flu, which is not a coronavirus, free flu shots are available by appointment at the Glen Burnie Health Center (410-222-6633) and Parole Health Center (410-222-7247). Also, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when coughing or sneezing. Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
