Charges Pending After Frozen Beef Spill Closes Route 50: Police

Charges are pending against a truck driver after his rig crashed in Arnold, spilling its load and closing Route 50 for hours.

ARNOLD, MD – Charges are pending against a truck driver after his rig crashed in Arnold, spilling its load of frozen beef and closing Route 50 for hours, according to Maryland State Police. The driver and sole occupant of the tractor trailer is identified as Earl Stanley, 79, of Wyoming, Delaware, refused medical treatment at the scene.

About 2:15 a.m. Thursday, troopers from the Annapolis Barrack were called to the single-vehicle crash. Investigators say Stanley lost control of his 2003 International tractor and trailer while westbound on Route 50 near exit 29 in Arnold. The truck hit the guard rail and overturned, spilling a portion of its cargo into both the east and west lanes of Route 50.

Troopers from the Annapolis and Glen Burnie Barracks responded to the scene. Emergency medical personnel from Anne Arundel County also responded, along with Fireboard, and personnel from the Maryland Department of the Environment. Troopers from the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division helped in the investigation.

Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration responded and assisted with detours. The westbound lanes of Route 50 were closed for about five hours along with two of three eastbound lanes.
