Drivers Reminded To Use Caution Along MD2 In Anne Arundel Co.

After a construction worker was seriously injured along MD2 in Anne Arundel County, authorities are reminding drivers to be cautious.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD -- A construction worker suffered serious injuries after being struck by a passing vehicle while setting up construction cones on the Interstate 895 spur near MD2 (Ritchie Highway) in Anne Arundel County June 19. The contractor with A Halcon Contractors was hit at approximately 5:16 a.m. and was transported to an area hospital.

Because of the accident, the Maryland Transportation Authority reminds motorists to remain alert while driving and to be extra vigilant when traveling through construction zones. Distracted driving has become a leading cause of vehicle crashes in the U.S. and in Maryland, it contributes to 58 percent of all crashes, the MDTA reports.

The construction project to resurface the I-97 ramp to northbound I-895 will continue, with single lane closures occurring from 5 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily, through Tuesday, July 2. Overnight closures will occur from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Anne Arundel County and MDTA police officers also remind motorists to obey posted speed limits and overhead lane control signals at all times and to never tailgate. Fines for using a handheld phone while a vehicle is in motion range from $83 for the first offense to $160 for the third offense. Fines can be even higher if it is found a distracted driver hurts or kills someone.
