Today, as I was leaving a parking space at the BJ's in Pasadena, a woman suddenly walked behind my car. Now, why is this a problem? I have a short-statured car. I was enclosed by large OPAQUE vehicles on both sides. My car is a 2000 model so does not have any nifty computer warning systems. I can look all I want, strain my neck, use my mirrors, AND I DO, but I DO NOT HAVE X-RAY VISION. I back out slowly, and certainly this would minimize injury, however I really would rather not hit someone.
This woman was not paying attention, she was talking on her cell phone, which was not in her hand but on her shoulder. Her head was bent over to hold it in place. Thank heaven I caught a glimmer of movement. I make it a point to look multiple times before backing out in lots for this very reason. I wanted her to know she almost got hit as she was oblivious. I tried telling her nicely, but she chose to be rude and confrontational, telling me she "is the pedestrian and if I had hit her it would have 'sucked to be me'". What little Ms. Entitled didn't clue into was, all the police would have to see was the evidence of my backing out, her distracted phone conversation, and no skid marks to conclude that it would have been "her bad" not mine. There is such a thing as pedestrian error, folks. When I am walking I am responsible for my safety. If I choose to walk where I cannot see all the cars in a row, I take a chance one might be backing out. If I choose to cross a street mid-block instead of at a crosswalk, and with the light, and I am hit, it is my fault. Being a pedestrian does not relieve us of responsibility.
