Police: Drunk Driver Crashes into Building

Officers arrested an Edgewater man who allegedly left the scene after crashing his car into a building while driving and came back later.

An Edgewater man was allegedly driving under the influence when he crashed into a building, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

Officers responded to the Mayo Office Building on the 600 block of Central Avenue in Edgewater around 1:48 a.m. on Tuesday for a report of a car crashing into the building.

The caller told police that the driver of a red Toyota sedan crashed his car into the building, then got into another car and left the scene, according to police. The car was badly damaged, along with damage to the building.

Robert Damon Bernhard, 20, of Edgewater returned to the scene shortly after the accident. Officers conducted sobriety tests after smelling alcohol on his breath and noticing his glassy eyes and slurred speech. He performed poorly on a balance test, according to police.

Bernhardt was arrested and charged with and charged with DUI and failure to remain at the scene of a property damage accident.
