Woman, Child Injured In Blaze Sparked By Indoor Fire Pit

Anne Arundel County fire officials said a fire used to make s'mores on Monday burned a woman and child at a 3-story townhome in Laurel.

LAUREL, MD — A woman and a 9-year-old child were injured Monday in a blaze that officials said was sparked by an indoor ignitable liquid flame kit commonly used to make s'mores.

According to Anne Arundel County fire officials, crews responded to a three-story townhome in the 8500 block of Crooked Tree Lane in Laurel shortly before 4 p.m.

Officials said the fire started in the home's living room. Crews were able to contain the fire and keep it from spreading to other parts of the house.

According to officials, the woman and child both suffered burns fromf the fire. The 9-year-old was taken to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Facility with life-threatening injuries. The woman was treated and released at the scene.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, similar indoor fire pits have been associated with two deaths and at least 60 injuries since 2019.

On Dec. 19, the agency issued a consumer alert urging consumers to stop purchasing the fire pits following a similar warning to stop using FLIKRFIRE Tabletop Fireplaces and the recall of Colsen-branded tabletop fire pits.

In a statement released Tuesday, the Anne Arundel County Fire Department urged anyone who has purchased similar liquid flame kits to stop using the products.
