AG Makes Decision On Fatal Arbutus Shooting
Maryland Attorney General has decided to file no charges in a fatal shooting involving Baltimore County police, his office announced.
BALTIMORE COUNTY, MD — Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown announced Tuesday that he would not be moving forward with any charges in a fatal shooting that happened last year in Arbutus.
After reviewing available files in the case, Brown determined that no crime was committed under state law.
The decision stems from the April 2025 case involving Arvel Jones Sr. and Baltimore County detective Todd Wiedel, who came in contact with Jones after receiving reports that Jones had been using a bow to shoot arrows at passing cars.

At the time, Wiedel had been responding to calls for backup from an officer with the Baltimore County Police Department. Wiedel was in the area in plain clothes and in an unmarked police cruiser.

Within moments of Wiedel arriving at the intersection of Leeds and North avenues, he withdrew his firearm as Jones also turned toward the detective and pointed his bow and arrow.
While both discharged their weapons, it was Jones who suffered a fatal injury. He died at the scene despite life-saving measures taken by Wiedel and emergency medical personnel.
Schools in the area had been placed on a temporary lockdown after reports first began to surface that an individual was walking around with a loaded bow and arrow.
Along with the announcement that no charges would be filed, the attorney general also released a copy of the declination report put together by the Independent Investigations Division.
