Another boy who required rescue after falling through the ice remained in serious condition Tuesday, officials reported.
Chive Omar Benjamin, 12, of the 7200 block of Calm Sunset Road in Columbia, was rescued by a pair of men who saw the children fall into the pond and ran into the icy water to help them, officials said. The bystanders did not know one another and were able to pull Benjamin to shore, according to the report.
Benjamin was in serious condition Tuesday morning at the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, officials said.
Two boys who got out of the pond on their own were taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where they were evaluated and released, officials said. The Baltimore County Police and Fire Departments issued the following statement Tuesday: Never walk on top of a pond, stream, or any other body of water that is covered by ice. While the ice may look stable, it is not. Walking on the ice could lead to tragedy. Parents should speak with their children about the dangers of walking on ice.
