Just before the ceremony began, officials said a cluster of men separated from the gathering, and gunshots rang out in the smaller group.

Two people were injured with what appeared to be gunshot wounds, police said. One of them died, and that person will not be identified until next of kin has been notified, according to officials.

The other person who was shot was taken to the hospital with injuries that police said were life-threatening. He was in grave condition after 5:15 p.m., authorities reported.

Four emergency medical crews took a total of three people to area hospitals, according to the Baltimore County Fire Department. One of them was the man who died, police said.

Some roads were closed surrounding the crime scene for the afternoon, and nearby Lansdowne High School was temporarily placed on lockdown during the response.

Police said the lockdown at Lansdowne High School was lifted by 2 p.m.
