12-Mile Labor Day Backups Clear Near Bay Bridge
Drivers headed home from the Eastern Shore encountered heavy delays Monday afternoon, which cleared after several hours of backups.
QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY, MD — Traffic was backed up for miles as Labor Day travelers returned home from the holiday weekend and headed west toward the Bay Bridge Monday afternoon. By 9:15 p.m., the delays had cleared, according to transportation officials.
There was a 12-mile delay before the bridge on US 50 west, the Maryland Transportation Authority reported after 4:30 p.m. The volume of traffic had steadily increased since 1 p.m., when officials said delays were about 4 miles on westbound US 50 before the Bay Bridge.
Delays on US 50 started at Bloomingdale Road as of 4:50 p.m., according to officials; that is about 12.6 miles from the bridge.

By 6 p.m., transportation officials said the delays were about 8 miles; by 7:30 p.m., they were down to 5 miles; and by 8:10 p.m., backups had been reduced to 3 miles, officials reported.
Bay Bridge backups had cleared by 9:15 p.m., according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Transportation officials said the best time to cross the Bay Bridge from the holiday weekend was before 10 a.m. Monday and after midnight.
