Bach in Baltimore Announces Celebration of Psalms Concert

With Special Guests Hazzan Emanuel Perlman and Amy Keesun Kwon

(Baltimore)—Bach in Baltimore announced today its Celebration of the Psalms Concert on March 3, 2019 at 4 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer located at 5603 N. Charles Street in Baltimore. This special concert event features a selection of psalms including Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Antonín Dvořák’s Psalm 23 performed in Hebrew with Hazzan Emanuel Perlman from Chizuk Amuno Congregation. The 9th Annual BachFest Fundraiser will immediately follow the concert at 6 p.m. at the same location. The BachFest Fundraiser celebrates Bach in Baltimore’s 31 years of outstanding performances and programs while raising critical funding to support the Bach Concert Series, arts education programing, and outreach initiatives available throughout the year.

Though typically known for performing the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and other Baroque masters like Handel and Vivaldi, Bach in Baltimore is thrilled to expand its repertoire for this program to celebrate the majesty and colorful splendor of the psalms. Led by Music Director and conductor T. Herbert Dimmock, the full Bach in Baltimore Choir, double brass choir, harp, organ, percussion will perform sacred choral works by three distinguished composers: the beloved American composer Leonard Bernstein in celebration of his 100th birthday; the Baroque and early Renaissance Italian composer Giovanni Gabrieli; and the 19th century Czech composer Antonín Dvořák. “These works are both musically significant—for instance, some say Gabrieli’s virtuosity led to the Baroque movement—and stunningly gorgeous. They are sparkling gems glittering with rhythmic imagination, technical complexity, and effervescent charm,” said Maestro Dimmock.

Bach in Baltimore is delighted to welcome back Hazzan Emanuel “Manny” Perlman, who will join the choir to perform Dvořák’s Psalm 23 in Hebrew. Hazzan Perlman last joined the Bach in Baltimore Choir and Orchestra in April 2018 for the Yom HaShoah Holocaust Commemoration–A Tribute to the Human Spirit: Verdi’s Requiem at Chizuk Amuno Congregation. In addition to Hazzan Perlman, Bach in Baltimore is very pleased to welcome soprano Amy KeeSun Kwon as a featured soloist for Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms and Archbishop Curley High School as the Student Voice Exchange guest choir. The concert program concludes with exhilarating antiphonal works by our brass ensemble.

Immediately following the concert, the BachFest Fundraiser will commence. The evening includes a buffet dinner and open bar, as well as opportunities to win a raffle prizes and bid on items in our silent auction. Funds raised by the raffle tickets and silent auction bids will bring the transformative magic of music to life for our regions’ audiences who come out to our monthly concerts and to audiences that we bring music to—Bach in Baltimore visits 7-8 area nursing homes and retirement communities each season to share the beauty of Baroque music with residents who are unable to travel to see us perform. Funding raised will also help Bach in Baltimore continue to provide an exceptional artistic home for our many musicians, soloists, and choir members. Additionally, it will help to grow our Student Voice Exchange program, which is now one of the largest music education programs in Maryland, that provides an instructive experience for guest student choirs while offering a performance opportunity at our cantata concerts.

Admission to the Celebration of the Psalms Concert and BachFest Fundraiser are $60. Tickets to attend the Concert only are $40. Take $5 off with promo code at checkout: PATCH.
