Bach in Baltimore is thrilled to kick off its 35th season on Sunday, October 2 at 4 pm at the Maryland State Boychoir Center for the Arts

Bach in Baltimore invites the community for an afternoon of Bach Baroque gems on Sunday, October 2 at 4pm at the Maryland State Boychoir Center for the Arts, located at 3400 Norman Avenue, Baltimore. The Program includes Bach Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C Major and Cantata 3. Live and Live-Streamed tickets are available at bachinbaltimore.org.

Formed in 1988 with a mission to perform choral and instrumental works of Johann Sebastian Bach (and his contemporaries) and educate the concert-going public about the musical language of Bach and the texts he chose to set to music, Bach in Baltimore celebrates 35 years throughout the 2022-2023 Season. With a 40-45-member choir accompanied by a fully professional orchestra filled with Baroque specialists, Bach in Baltimore performs concerts at least once a month in some of the most beautiful and historic sacred sites in our community from inner harbor, Ellicott City, Lutherville, and more. At nearly every concert, we feature talented vocal soloists in our region, and this season, it welcomes its first cohort of “Emerging Artists.” These talented young professionals are launching their professional music careers in our region.

The orchestral and choral program for the October 2 concert “If It Ain’t Baroque, Don’t Fix it” pairs two very different works by J S Bach. Orchestral Suite No. 1 in C Major is a dazzling display of Baroque counterpoint, a technique that uses multiple melodies to create a complex, multilayered sound. Bach not only excelled at counterpoint, but developed new directions for applying this technique, which is one of the many reasons his music continues to be intensely studied hundreds of years after it was first written and performed. The concert closes with Bach’s Cantata 3: Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid (Oh God, how much heartache), a meditation on dealing with suffering and pain. This work was chosen by Music Director and Maestro, T. Herbert Dimmock, to open the season in solidarity with the people of Ukraine who have suffered so much recently. Featured guest soloists for this concert include Elissa Edwards, soprano; Kristen Dubenion-Smith, alto, and Edmund Milly, bass.
Live and live-streamed tickets are available for this concert with by calling 410-941-9262 or online at bachinbaltimore.org. Door tickets with also be made available starting at 3:30pm for $30 for adults, $10 for students with IDs, and $5 for children. Please read our Health and Safety Measures before coming to our concert.
