Baltimore Man to Pay $1M for Cutting Fire Hose During Riot

The man who hampered firefighters' efforts to battle CVS blaze will not do jail time, judge ruled.

BALTIMORE, MD - The man who cut a fire hose during the April 2015 riot in Baltimore was sentenced Thursday to pay restitution and serve probation time.

Gregory Lee Butler Jr., aka "Greg Baly," 22, was ordered to pay $1 million in restitution and serve 250 hours of community service by U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz.

Butler pleaded guilty to the federal charge of obstruction of firefighters during a civil disorder, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

After looters set fire to the CVS in the 2500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Butler admitted he used a knife to puncture the fire hose connected to a hydrant near Pennsylvania at West North avenues on April 27, 2015, according to officials with the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland.

While he will not do jail time, Butler will be on supervised release for three years.
