Baltimore Orioles Chaplain Dies Of Cancer: Report

Rev. John Joseph Bauer died Dec. 20 at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. He was 92.

BALTIMORE, MD —The Rev. John Joseph Bauer, a Roman Catholic priest who served as a military chaplain during the Vietnam War and later became chaplain for the Baltimore Orioles, died of cancer Dec. 20, according to reports. He was 92 years old.

Born in Baltimore, Bauer became a military chaplain at the age of 42, the Baltimore Sun reports. For his service, he was awarded a Bronze Star with the Oak Leaf Cluster in addition to other medals.

Bauer became Orioles chaplain in 2004.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 600 S. Conkling St.

On December 20,2019, Rev. John Joseph Bauer, C.Ss.R.,92, a retired lieutenant colonel Army chaplain and Baltimore Orioles chaplain, beloved son to the late Sebastian and Angela (nee Castrili) Bauer, dear brother to Marie Betch and the late Margaret Senkel, Teresa Boatwright and Angela Frawley, also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and his Redemptorist confreres.

Family and friends may gather at Lilly & Zeiler Funeral Home, 700 S. Conkling St., on Thursday, December 26th, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. and on Friday, December 27th, from 2-4 p.m.

A Christian Wake Service will be held in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on Friday, December 27th at 7:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on Saturday, December 28th at 10 a.m. Interment to follow in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery.
