THE ROOTS CAFÉ SINGER-SONGWRITER SERIES PRESENTS: SETH KIBEL &amp; GEOFFREY HIMES “Songs of Resistance” at An die Musik Live!In these troubled times of No Kings rallies and monarchical wars, of shantytowns and gold-leafed castles, of fortified fences and a snuffed-out torch on the Statue of Liberty, music’s long tradition of songs of protest and resistance is needed more than ever. Two of Baltimore's finest songwriters, Seth Kibel and Geoffrey Himes have long been writing and performing satires, narratives and anthems designed to afflict the comfortable and to comfort the afflicted. Among the songs scheduled for this special concert are “Alex Pretti,” “Take Off the Mask, You Cowards” and “Maybe I’ve Been Had.”Seth Kibel is one of the Mid-Atlantic's premier woodwind specialists, working with some of the best bands in klezmer, jazz, swing, and more. Wowing audiences on clarinet, flute, and saxophone, Seth has made a name for himself in the Washington/Baltimore region and beyond. He is a featured performer with The Kleztet, Bay Jazz Project, Music Pilgrim Trio, Daryl Davis Band, The Natty Beaux, and more. Winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies), including “Best World Music Instrumentalist” (2003-11) and “Best Jazz Instrumentalist” (2005, 2007-8, 2011-14). His most recent recording, “Clown with a Stick,” was released in May 2023 on the Azalea City Recordings record label. He's won numerous prizes in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest (MASC) including the Grand Prize in 2016 and a Gold Prize in 2022. Legendary percussionist and bandleader Kahil El'Zabar joins forces with saxophone icon David Murray at An die Musik Live for their 2026 tour, WE BE FREE—a dynamic and deeply expressive program rooted in spiritual jazz improvisation, and the ongoing exploration of freedom through sound.Having captivated audiences worldwide for over 40 years, they continue to build on their shared legacy as pioneers of Great Black Music, bringing together decades of innovation, global performance history, and cultural impact.Sir Kahil El’Zabar was Knighted by the Council General of France for Global Contributions to the Arts. He has performed with luminaries like Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Pharoah Sanders, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Archie Shepp, Eddie Harris, Donny Hathaway, Paul Simon, Ntozake Shange, Nona Hendryx, Neneh Cherry, Lester Bowie, Hamiet Bluiett, Malachi Favors, Billy Bang and Gene Ammons. Dr. El’Zabar, holds a PhD from Lake Forest College in Interdisciplinary Arts. He taught music and interdisciplinary arts at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln, and University of Illinois in Chicago. President Bill Clinton appotinted him to the National Task Force for Arts Presenting in Education. He won the International Ambassador Award from President Barak Obama’s Administration.Dr. El’zabar has served on the prestigious boards of the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Fund, The National Endowment of the Arts, and the National Campaign for the Freedom of Expression. He is the former chairmen of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). El’Zabar has recorded over 100 acclaimed projects, and founded and leads the legendary Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and Ritual Trio.David Murray is considered to be the most influential tenor saxophonist of his generation. He has recorded more than 300 acclaimed projects. He has worked with many of the giants, such as Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Cecil Taylor, Jack DeJohnette, Chico Hamilton, Elvin Jones, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Randy Weston, the list goes on. He is co founder of the World Saxophone Quartet and leads the famed David Murray Quartet, David Murray Octet, and the David Murray Big Band. Dr. Murray was awarded a PhD in the Arts from Claremont College, is a Guggenheim Fellow and a Fulbright Scholar. Dr. Murray has won two Grammys and is the prestigious recipient of the Jazz Par Award from the country of Denmark. After thrilling NYC audiences over the last two decades, Baltimore-natives Cori Robinson and John Gordon breathe new life into the music of Soul/R&amp;B legends Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, who are a part of the iconic American music tapestry that have touched the hearts of the world. As a classical, jazz, and musical theater trained singer, Cori Robinson has performed with the Opera Ebony company, The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and The Metro Chamber Orchestra.&nbsp;She has been a featured guest at New York’s famous Blue Note Jazz Club and the Apollo Theater, as well as media and touring venues including Saturday Night Live, Last Call with Carson Daly, the Sprite Liquid Mix Tour, New York’s Summer Stage and others; providing live backing vocals for a variety of artists such as Gwen Stefani, Kanye West, Bobby McFerrin, Robert Randolph, B. Slade, MosDef, and others.
Baltimore-born with a Brooklyn heart, John Gordon was raised on old soul music, 80’s-90’s&nbsp;R&amp;B/pop and jazz. John honed his singer/songwriter skills during the 90’s&nbsp;as a member of neo-soul/jazz fusion band,&nbsp;Ascension.&nbsp;They found worldwide appeal with their 1997 release&nbsp;Naked Soul, performing at venues like BET Live, Larry Stewart’s,&nbsp;NYC’s Demerara’s, and opening for music greats Najee and Angela Bofill. After moving to NYC,&nbsp;John released his internationally loved , “soul.funk.drunk.love’”&nbsp;EP in 2010,&nbsp;produced by Grammy Award-winning jazz musician, Nate Smith. In 2020, he released the “Luv Junkie” EP that led with the big band R&amp;B single, “Missing Me”.

One of the earliest musicians to break through on YouTube under the name Phatfffat, Dondria turned viral covers and undeniable vocals into a major label deal with&nbsp;Island Def Jam&nbsp;and&nbsp;So So Def Recordings. Scott Ambush, bass Chris Fischer, keyboard&nbsp; Al Williams III, saxophone&nbsp; Deren Blessman, drums&nbsp; Eddie Montalvo, percussion&nbsp; Mysterious Traveler: The Music of the Weather Report is a tribute performance dedicated to the music of Weather Report, the influential jazz fusion ensemble active from 1970-1985. Founded by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, the band was known for its innovative approach, blending jazz with elements of rock, funk, Latin, and world music. The program includes selections from across the band’s catalog, including music from the album&nbsp;Heavy Weather, which features “Birdland”, later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. During the mid 1970’s after Jaco Pastorius joined the group, the bands’ live performances became events, as their music drew in both serious listeners and non-jazz fans alike.&nbsp; This ensemble includes&nbsp;Scott Ambush and&nbsp;Chris Fischer, both original members of Spyro Gyra. They are joined by&nbsp;Al Williams III,&nbsp;Deren Blessman, and&nbsp;Eddie Montalvo, musicians whose background includes work with artists such as Stanley Clarke, Gregg Karukas, and Christian de Mesones.

Tyreek McDole, a 24-year-old Haitian-American vocalist from sunny Florida, shines brilliantly as his star rises in the bustling New York scene. In November 2023, Tyreek won 1st place in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Noted as one of the most anticipated events in jazz, McDole's accolade now ranks him among the competition's previous winners including the standout artists Samara Joy (2019 winner) and Jazzmeia Horn (2013 winner). Tyreek is the 2nd male to ever win in the competition’s 12 year history. Tyreek has shared the stage with an impressive roster of musicians, including Theo Croker, NEA Jazz Master Gary Bartz, Miki Yamanaka, Mike King, Rodney Whitaker, Winard Harper, Marcus Printup, Eric Reed, Carl Allen, Victor Goines, and many others. With his roots firmly planted in the musical soil of the Caribbean, New York, Florida, and beyond, McDole now casts his spell on the bustling streets of New York City, leaving an indelible mark on the vibrant tapestry of worldwide music.

SAIL250® Maryland &amp; Air Show Baltimore Brings Weeklong Celebration to Inner Harbor and Surrounding Areas in June 2026
SAIL250® Maryland &amp; Airshow Baltimore, June 24-July 1, 2026, is a free family-friendly weeklong event that welcomes international tall ships, U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard vessels, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron, flyovers by military and historic aircraft, festivals in and around the city, live entertainment, STEM and Living History education programming, family activities and more. It will take place at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, North Locust Point, Fells Point, Baltimore Peninsula and Baltimore County’s Martin State Airport. This event honors the dedication of the service members who have defended our freedoms at sea and in the air, both past and present for the past 250 years. It is part of Sail250®, a five-city, global gathering of tall ships, military vessels, and aviation assets coming together to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States featuring a traveling flotilla going from New Orleans to Norfolk, to Baltimore, to New York and finishing up in Boston. Some regard Althea&nbsp;René&nbsp;as a "master of her craft" and one of the world's most exciting solo improvisational soul-jazz flutists. The multiplatinum and Grammy-nominated saxophonist Najee playfully refers to her as the “Maceo of the flute”. Althea gained musical inspiration from her father Dezie McCullers (one of Motown's original Funk Brothers), and has since developed her creative style. Althea&nbsp;René is the proud recipient of the 2021 Presidential Volunteer Service Award, and is the first soul-jazz flutist ever featured on the prestigious Dave Koz Jazz Cruise. With a passionate mission to mentor women in the entertainment industry,&nbsp;Althea&nbsp;René authored an autobiography titled "Becoming Chocolate Barbie - a guide for professional women in the music business" in June 2018.&nbsp;
