55th Anniversary of Muhammad Ali vs Joe Frazier 1 "The Fight", says Charm'tastic Mile
March 8, 2026 - The "Charm'tastic Mile" of Baltimore (CTMB-1.3) www.thecharmtasticmile.com. The chic & famed 1.3 mile corridor located in the heart of Charm City (Est.1975) that connects Dwtn-West, the Inner Harbor & Harbor East (S. Greene & W. Pratt Street to S. President & Fleet Street) that is now listed on Google search as one of the Top 10-15 Most Famous Streets in America is reporting 55-years ago today Muhammad Ali (31-0) faced Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Joe Frazier (26-0) in what was billed as the Fight of the Century.
On March 8, 1971 the biggest sporting event up until that time occurred. It was the Battle of the Champs (Life Magazine) or simply "The Fight". Two undefeated champs entered the ring at the Mecca of Sports, Madison Square Garden in front of 19,000 cheering & screaming fans with another estimated 1 million watching on close circuit world wide.
In this corner from Louisville, Kentucky the return of the champion Muhammad Ali and in this corner the undisputed heavyweight champion from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Joe Frazier, the arena got louder and the bell rang for the start of the 15-round battle that began arguably the most intriguing and historical trilogy in sports.
Ali was in his 3rd comeback fight since his 3 1/2 year exile from boxing was going to face the toughest foe of his career. This wasn't the young 22-year old that dazed and dazzled Sonny Liston back in 1964 at the Miami Convention Center. This was a 29-year-old who had over 3-years of rust. He was fighting a punching-machine Joe Frazier in the prize fight of his career.
This night belonged to Frazier who nearly stopped Ali in the 11th round, "The Greatest" who previously (before exile) could get out of being punched with one-slide-step but now needed two when he returned to the ring. Joe's most signature moment came in the 15th round when floored Muhammad and sealed his victory.
The two boxing Icons would face each other 2 more times. In their second fight on January 28, 1974 back at MSG Ali would defeat Joe by unanimous decision. Frazier lost the heavyweight title a year earlier (1-22-73) to George Foreman. Their 3rd and final bout on October 1, 1975 was given the title the "Thrilla In Manila". Both fighters were at the end of their primes. Ali won the rubber-match when Joe didn't answer the bell for the 15th round.
Ali became Champ when he beat George Foreman by 8th round KO (10-30-1974) in a fight that was billed as the "Rumble In the Jungle". The historic bout took place in Zaire, Africa now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
55-years ago, Ali vs Frazier 1 remains one of the most historic moments in sports and American history. R.I.P. to both legends Muhammad Ali & Joe Frazier. This coming June 3rd will be the 10th Anniversary of Ali passing away. Joe died on November 7, 2011.
