Jimi Hendrix named his Band of Gypsys in tribute to Reinhardt, and Willie Nelson adopted his influence in playing country swing.
Step into a night that feels lifted from a Parisian café and goes roaring into the 21st century. The Django Festival Allstars deliver a musical experience bursting with spirit, swing, and soul in what The Wall Street Journal calls “the best jazz show in town.”
Led by guitarist Samson Schmitt, son of gypsy jazz legend Dorado Schmitt, this all-acoustic ensemble of international virtuosos radiates joy and passion through blazing guitar riffs, soaring violin, dazzling accordion, and deep, grooving bass. The result is an electrifying blend of old-school swing and modern energy that brings audiences to their feet. DownBeat praises them as “the hardest swinging group,” while George Benson calls them simply “sensational.”

Maryland Art Place, in partnership with Hotel Indigo Baltimore, is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Baltimore-based artist, Lou Joseph. The exhibition is on view at Hotel Indigo, located at 24 West Franklin St. from July 17 - September 18. A public reception will take place on Sunday, August 9&nbsp; from Noon to 2 PM.
About the Artist:&nbsp; Lou Joseph’s work primarily explores the process of building and tearing down paintings and constructions, working iteratively and in many layers. Shapes and patterns are added and subtracted through a range of methods—painting, drawing, airbrushing, collage, cutting, carving, woodworking, casting, sanding, and more—to produce a tenuous balance. In this process, there are hundreds of cast-off or failed paintings that are eventually cannibalized into newer artworks. This ongoing cycle of creation, sorting, and reuse mirrors Lou Joseph’s voracious appetite for taking in the world around him, from art, comics, graffiti, and children’s colorful toys, to signage, patterning, and the natural world. Ultimately, his practice is about the daily push and pull of making work: a studio full of artwork, scraps, supplies, and tools in constant motion, held together by the joy of making. Bio: Lou Joseph is an artist and arts administrator based in Baltimore, Maryland. He is currently the Arts, Culture and Events Coordinator at Baltimore County Recreation and Parks department. Born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1975, he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a BFA in painting in 1998 and received an MFA in printmaking from Indiana University in 2004. He continues an active studio practice, primarily working on painting and long-term collaborative projects, and has exhibited work in New York, Chicago, Venice, Berlin among others. From 2012 to 2022 he directed the Institute of Contemporary Art Baltimore, an artist-run nomadic art space, staging 36 large scale solo artists exhibitions, along with professional practice programming. He lives with his family in the city of Baltimore.

As an award-winning Billboard #1 artist, Jonathan Butler is a singer-songwriter and guitarist who leads a life few can imagine. Born in South Africa under the shadow of apartheid and raised in poverty, Butler was the first non-white artist to be played on South African radio and appear on national television. It is for many reasons that Nelson Mandela credits Butler’s music as having inspired him during his imprisonment.
At thirteen, Jonathan’s talents caught the eyes and ears of the British record producer Clive Caulder. He was signed to Caulder’s Jive Records and the rest is history. Jonathan’s first single broke down racial barriers becoming the first song by a black artist played by white radio stations in South Africa and won the South African equivalent to a GRAMMY®. His commitment to his craft came to fruition with his self-titled debut album, which received a GRAMMY® nomination for the pop hit “Lies.” An instrumental “Going Home” earned him another GRAMMY® nomination and the mid-tempo ballad “Sarah, Sarah” confirmed Butler’s place in popular music. In 2025, Butler received an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from the prestigious Stellenbosch University in South Africa.
