Livestream: Rep. Elijah Cummings Lies In State In Capitol

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings is making history in Washington, D.C., as the public pays respects to the Baltimore congressman.

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings is making history, even after his death. He is the first African- American lawmaker to lie in state in the Capitol.

Cummings, who was chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, will lie in state in the National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol on Thursday, starting with a formal ceremony open to members of Congress, family of Cummings and invited guests, according to a statement from Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

A public viewing will follow the private ceremony.

The Capitol Rotunda has been used for public viewing of "the nation's most distinguished citizens," including 12 U.S. presidents, according to the House of Representatives archives.

Cummings, who died Thursday at age 68, was born the son of former sharecroppers and rose to become a key figure in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The funeral service for Cummings will be held at 10 a.m. at New Psalmist Baptist Church, 6020 Marian Drive, Baltimore. There will be a viewing at 8 a.m.

Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are both scheduled to speak at the funeral.
