BALTIMORE, MD – An off-duty Baltimore Police officer shot an armed burglar who broke into his northeast Baltimore City home Monday morning, authorities reported.

The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, later died, police said.

At 11:30 a.m. on Monday, the policeman called 911 to report the shooting at his home in the 4400 block of Furley Avenue, according to Captain Jarron Jackson.

An armed suspect had broken into the officer's home while the policeman was sleeping, Jackson said. The officer lives with his family but was home alone at the time, he added, and awoke because he could feel the presence of someone there with him.

When he awakened, Jackson said the suspect confronted him and demanded money.

A physical struggle followed, during which the officer took the suspect's handgun away and used it to shoot the intruder, according to Jackson.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital and was in serious condition Monday morning, Jackson said. The officer was uninjured.

After 2 p.m., police reported the suspect died from his injuries at the hospital.

Based on preliminary investigation, police reported that it did not appear the suspect knew he was breaking into the home of a police officer. The case remains under investigation.

"We're asking the community...if they saw someone strange in the neighborhood or a car they didn't immediately recognize," to please call in tips, Jackson said.
