Ex Baltimore Officer Faces 3 Charges: State's Attorney

The Baltimore policeman who resigned after an assault over the weekend has been charged with criminal offenses.

BALTIMORE, MD — A former Baltimore police officer has been criminally charged in connection with a beating that was captured on video by multiple citizens. The state's attorney announced the indictment on Tuesday, which was three days after the alleged incident that sent a man to the hospital.

Two officers were working at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday in the 2500 block of Monument Street when they encountered someone who was familiar to one of the officers, police said. When they asked and he would not give his identification, authorities said the situation escalated and one officer hit the man multiple times, threw him to the ground and detained him, according to the video.

Arthur Williams has been charged with first and second-degree assault as well as misconduct in office, the state's attorney reported.

Officer Williams resigned on Sunday from the Baltimore Police Department.

"It is important that the community knows there is one standard of justice, no matter your sex, race religion, or occupation,” Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby said in a statement. “Police officers are sworn to protect and serve and when that oath is taken for granted and an abuse of that power is evident, we will hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law. This is an integral part to rebuilding trust in our criminal justice system."

Upon being indicted on Tuesday, Williams turned himself in to police and was being held at central booking, WJZ reported.
