Federal Grant To Send Baltimore Students On Field Trips To 3 Historical Sites

BALTIMORE, MD - From Congressman John Sarbanes: Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) today announced that the National Park Foundation (NPF) will award $142,820 to support field trips for Baltimore City fourth graders to visit Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Gwynn Falls in Baltimore National Heritage Area and Hampton National Historic Site.

Funding comes from NPF’s Open OutDoors for Kids program, which strives to connect more kids to national parks and historical sites through engaging and enriching educational activities.

“Field trips to national parks like Fort McHenry not only provide young students with transformative, outdoor learning experiences but also deepen their connection to local history,” said Congressman John Sarbanes, a longtime advocate for environmental education. “This grant funding from the National Park Foundation is a tremendous gift for Baltimore students that will not only inspire the next generation of environmental stewards but also bolster students’ appreciation for the rich American culture and history that Maryland has to offer.”

In addition to Baltimore, NPF’s Open OutDoors for Kids program will provide $2 million in grant funding to 130 National Park Service sites around the country and help bring more than 200,000 students to national parks for outdoor educational field trips during the 2017-2018 school year.
