John Waters Joins Fight For Drag Queen Mural
A three-story mural of Divine, a drag queen and inspiration for Waters, is the subject of a city controversy.

BALTIMORE, MD — Controversy over a "Divine" mural in Baltimore's Mount Vernon has renowned director John Waters involved. The three-story mural was painted without a city permit, according to BizJournals.
Divine, the actor and drag queen who starred in Waters works like "Pink Flamingos" and "Hairspray," is the subject of the mural. Viewers see a confident face and the words "I'm So Beautiful" in the hair.
Waters will try to make his case on Nov. 13 at a hearing run by CHAP, the Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation.

BizJournals reported Waters, one of Baltimore's most prominent cultural icons, plans to fight for the mural because of its unifying message of love.
"Of course I am for the mural," Waters said in an email to BizJournals. "Have been there, taken friends and am fully supportive of the artistic choice of the home owners and the positive influence on the neighborhood.”

Jesse Salazar, who lives in the rowhouse with the mural, is wants the commission to approve the mural, according to the report.
