MARYLAND — Gov. Hogan declared Friday, July 5, a state holiday for 2019. The announcement means that state employees will have the day off to continue their Fourth of July celebrations after Thursday.

"We have some tremendous family-friendly events taking place all around the state, not only on the Fourth of July, but throughout the entire weekend," Hogan said in a statement. "I hope the long holiday will encourage Marylanders to spend more time together and celebrate our nation’s independence with all we have to offer here in our great state."

Hogan did something similar when he declared Christmas Eve a state holiday in 2018.

For the closure Friday, July 5, state universities in the midst of summer session were given some leeway; they can stay open if they would like July 5 to allow for class and exam schedules to continue as planned, and they can reschedule the holiday for a later date, the governor advised.
