Maryland Weather: Snow Is In The Forecast

The National Weather Service advises snow is in the forecast this week. Here's when and how much to expect.

MARYLAND — After 60-degree temperatures on Veterans Day, forecasters say a chill is coming. Temperatures were above average Monday, with 68 degrees recorded before 2 p.m. at BWI.

Get ready for a 40-degree temperature drop. It will be in the 20s Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Cold air and rain will mix overnight, creating the potential for snow in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area and southern Maryland by midday Tuesday.

Any accumulation will be light, officials advise, and it will be primarily confined to grassy areas.

As central Maryland experiences the potential for a light dusting, western Maryland could get 3 to 5 inches of snow. Garrett County is under a winter weather advisory from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday calling for snowfall that could make roads slippery, coupled with wind gusts up to 35 mph.

Forecasters initially called for a cold front complete with rain and snow in the mid-Atlantic by Tuesday afternoon; but they revised their forecast to reflect a decreased likelihood of snow in some parts of the region.

"Rain may mix with and perhaps even change to a period of snow before ending by mid-afternoon," according to the National Weather Service's forecast discussion. "Given the recent warm conditions, and the fact that temps will most likely remain just above freezing, most places will see little or no accumulation."

Regardless of the precipitation, the conditions will feel frigid, and temperatures will drop throughout the day.

"The gusty northwest winds will continue behind the front this afternoon and evening along with bitterly cold conditions for this time of year," forecasters say. "Temps in the 30s to perhaps near 40 this afternoon will fall quickly into the 20s (teens in mountains)."

The bitter cold comes days after central Maryland hit a record low.

Baltimore broke its daily low temperature record over the weekend, hitting a low of 24 degrees Saturday, Nov. 9. The previous record was 25 degrees, reached on Nov. 9 in 1967, 1976 and 2003, the weather service reported.

Baltimore wasn't the only place it was frigid. The National Weather Service declared Saturday that the growing season had officially ended, after below-freezing temperatures were recorded in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George's counties.

With the cold temperatures ahead, officials advise preparing: Check the battery in your car, check your coolant, check your tires and make sure you have jumper cables and a blanket in your vehicle.

For your home, check your furnace and chimneys. You should also check your carbon monoxide detector and insulate any exposed pipes.
